The Empowering Communities Programme is an initiative using a community development approach to address social exclusion and the impacts of poverty and disadvantage in very specific target areas. It focuses on supporting local communities to build leadership within that community and support and enhance collaboration between existing community structures to develop and help implement tailored responses to the specific challenges faced by them.

Aims:

  1. To empower the identified community to tackle area-based disadvantage and social exclusion.
  2. And to empower local people to craft their own response to area based poverty, social exclusion and the resulting consequences, with the support of the relevant services.

Longford Community Resources CLG (LCRL) is one of the areas where this programme is being rolled out.  A Community Engagement Worker is now in place and will use a community development approach to engage and support the residents of the areas identified.

Already a number of activities have taken place and we will continue to do what is necessary to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the residents in the local area as well as supporting the development of independent groups and services.
