LEADER uses a ‘bottom-up’ or community led local development approach to rural development. It is part of the overall Rural Development Programme (RDP) 2014-2020 which includes a range of both on and off farm support measures for the sustainable development of rural Ireland.
While the overall RDP is delivered by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, LEADER is administered by the Department of Rural and Community Development. The priority of LEADER is to promote social inclusion, poverty reduction and economic development in rural areas.
