LCRL currently host the pilot Longford Volunteer Centre and its Volunteer Co-ordinator. Funding was secured following a submission made by LCRL, in consultation with the Longford Community & Voluntary Forum, Longford Women’s Link and Longford CBD, from the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, which ran out in August 2008. The LCRL Board made a commitment to fund the post until December 2008. An application has been made to the Department of CRGA to secure continuation funding, as the project supports volunteering efforts of community groups and identifies and trains volunteers, etc. An Audit of Volunteering Need of Community Groups and Volunteers in the County was conducted and completed in early 2008, funded by the Community Forum. The future work of the project is based on the findings. The Longford Volunteer Centre operates from 6 Earl Street, Longford and is open Mon - Wed from 9:00-5:00. It is affiliated with Volunteer Centres Ireland and is a registered authorised signatory for Garda Vetting. The Longford Volunteer Centre acts as a broker between individuals who wish to volunteer and those groups that involve volunteers. It exists to promote positive, inclusive well-managed volunteering within County Longford and acts as a centre of good practice for both organisations and volunteers. |

| Volunteerism |
||||||||||||||||||||||||
A volunteer is a person who freely contributes time and skills for their own enjoyment and for the benefit of the people in the community. Community development and activities within local communities rely heavily on volunteerism. There has been a reduction in the level of volunteering and in this light we acknowledge and are extremely grateful for the huge contribution volunteers have made to the work of Longford Community Resources Ltd, specifically to our work with young people. All members of the community are welcomed as volunteers, regardless of age, colour, nationality, etc., but for the safety of the participants involved in some activities, to become a volunteer, it may be necessary to have Garda Vetting, or a reference check. Some of the benefits you can expect from volunteering include:
