INTRODUCTION

Longford Community Resources Ltd (LCRL) is the Local Integrated Development Company for County Longford.

Mission Statement
Building on our strong foundations, to continue to work in partnership with other organisations and groups identifying social and economic need in CountyLongford, and through community development, empowering individuals and communities to improve their quality of life in a way that is self-sustaining.
Core Purpose

The core purpose of the company is to promote rural development and tackle social exclusion and LCRL does this through two key programmes: the Rural Development Programme and the Local and Community Development Programme. However, the company has bid for and secured other funds for development programmes that respond to needs identified in County Longford. The majority of LCRL’s funds are sourced via Pobal (from various government departments and EU monies), i.e. Dept of Community, Equality & Gaeltacht Affairs, Dept of Education & Skills, Dept of Transport, Dept of Justice & Law Reform, Dormant Accounts, etc. Our work is conducted in partnership with other agencies and organisations, as in working together we can achieve far more than working individually.

Phonics Ireland - How to teach Reading and Writing

Longford Community Resources Limited in conjunction with Co. Longford VEC is again running the Phonics Ireland Literacy Training Course for teachers.  The course will run from July 5th to July 9th at St. Emer’s N.S., Longford.  Over the past 6 years more than 150 teachers and adult education trainers have been trained in this sound and sensible method of teaching reading and writing.  Where this method has been embraced the results have been excellent. All primary schools in the county have received this information but there are still a few places left on this course so I would encourage any teacher with an interest to get in touch soon.If you as a parent, grandparent or teacher wish to find out more about this method of teaching reading and writing please see www.phonicsireland.com.  An online course is now also available.  You may also contact Pat Deegan, Education Co-ordinator at 043-3345555.

BMW Smallholder Skillnet to be Known as Rural Enterprise Skillnet
In 2007 LCRL carried out a detailed Training Needs Analysis to identify the training needs of low income farmers in County Longford.  54 smallholders participated in this survey.  The survey identified a need for Computer Training tailored to the needs of smallholders.  The information gathered from the survey was used by the BMW Smallholder Skillnet to lever funding from Skillnets.  From January 2008 to March 2010 the BMW Smallholder Skillnet provided part funding for almost 100 low income farmers in Longford to complete training in Welding, Ecotourism, Tiling, Computer Literacy and Interior Design.  The BMW Smallholder Skillnet ceased trading on 31st March 2010.

In early 2010, LCRL carried out another detailed Training Needs Analysis, interviewing more than 100 low income farmers in the county.  This information was used to lever further funding from Skillnets.  The new Skillnet providing part funding for low income farmers will be known as the Rural Enterprise Skillnet.  The Skillnet is currently organising City and Guilds accredited Sheep Shearing courses for farmers throughout Ireland.  For further information contact Mary Mulvey at 043-3345555 or Gerry Gallagher, Network Manager, Rural Business Skillnet at 071-9858252 or 087-6858550.
