PRIMARY HEALTHCARE PROJECT
FOR TRAVELLERS

The Primary Healthcare Project for Travellers in County Longford began in 2007 following a four year primary healthcare training programme for Travellers.  The Project, as the previous training programme, is funded by the Health Service Executive.  Through this funding from the Health Service Executive LCRL employs a part-time Community Development Health Worker to co-co-ordinate the project with a worker from the HSE, and also employs 7 part-time Community Health Workers, all of whom are members of the Traveller community.

The overall aim of the Primary Healthcare Project is to improve the health and life expectancy of Travellers living in County Longford.  This is done by the project through providing basic primary healthcare information and training to Travellers on issues such as healthy eating, child safety, first aid, exercise etc; promoting access to appropriate healthcare services by Travellers; and developing service providers understanding of Traveller issues.

The work of the Project is overseen by a Steering Group which is made up of representatives of the HSE, Longford Traveller Movement, St Mel’s Traveller Training Centre and Longford Community Resources Ltd.  This group meets every six weeks and their purpose is to direct, advise and support the development, implementation and evaluation of the Primary Healthcare Project.
