Services for Older People

Older Persons' Network (OPN)

LCRL supported the set up of the County Longford Older Person’s Network in 2002 and has continued to facilitate it since.

The aims of the Longford OPN are to:

  • Facilitate the networking of all older persons' groups in County Longford;
  • Work collectively towards representing the needs of older people in County Longford;
  • Encourage social interaction between all the older persons’ groups in County Longford and to develop links with clubs outside of the County;
  • Support the development of new older persons’ clubs and empower them to be independent;
  • Disseminate relevant information from statutory and voluntary bodies and EU sources;
  • Represent older people at national level;
  • Promote the positive image of older people within the community.

The Longford OPN is now in its ninth year and is made up of a range of voluntary groups, clubs and societies working at grass roots level with older people in County Longford. These groups come together on a monthly basis to share information and experience of innovative work, and to take action on issues affecting older people.

The OPN comprises of 20 groups specifically for older people. All these groups are voluntary and largely convened by older people themselves. Each of these groups assigns one member of their group to represent them at the monthly (OPN) meetings which are held on the second Monday of each month in the Family Centre at 2:30pm.  This meeting is also attended by the Community Gardai and representatives from the VEC and other relevant organisations.

The County Longford Older Persons Network actively participated in activities and events during Positive Ageing Week 2009.  It was also co–orgainiser of the Bealtaine Festival 2011 Programme in County Longford.  Many groups hosted events to help promote creativity in older people while also providing networking opportunities for individual groups at local level.
