A friendly service offering the opportunity of a
friendly chat and information on social activities for older people.


In 2007 LCRL and the County Development Board, in conjunction with the County Longford Older Persons Network, developed the Friendly Phone Call Service specifically designed to cater for older people living in County Longford, in consultation with the Health Service Executive, public health nurses and community organisations.

Longford Community Resources continues to support the Friendly Phone Call Service on a day to day basis to ensure that as many older people in the county have access to it as possible.

The Longford Friendly Phone Call Service aims to be a benefit to interested older people living in County Longford, by offering a free phone call service to older people, initially on a weekly basis. The phone call is made by trained volunteers at an agreed time. Older people can expect a service that supports individuals who are interested in a friendly chat with interesting people about any topic they choose while also allowing them the opportunity to keep informed on local activities and events in their community and services available to them that they may be interested in or could benefit from.

Longford Friendly Phone Call is a free service and aims to provide a service that informs older people on local activities and local services available as well as an opportunity for a friendly chat about the topic of their choice.


Personal service – friendly and confidential service from the comfort of your own home.
Regular support – calls will be made at regular time which you determine.
Community contact – information will be provided on local events of interest and services in the county.

How it works

An older person who wishes to avail of the service or their representative makes an initial phone call to the Friendly Phone Call Service. No other cost to Older Person other than the cost of initial call to the office.

All details in regard to the way the service operates are explained to them at that stage. If they are satisfied and decide to use the service, they will receive a small application form and information leaflet in the post which has to be completed by them or their representative.  The details to be completed on the form are:

  • Name, address and telephone number;
  • Also, the person will be requested to nominate a contact person to be contacted over the phone in case of an erergency (ie not being able to contact client on scheduled day or time).

The older person (client) determines the day and the time they will be contacted on a weekly basis. This can be flexible as the service runs from 10:00am to 4:00pm, Monday to Thursday.

Ample time will be given for a chat on a subject the person wishes to talk about. There is no rush or pressure. It is the person who decides what they want to talk about and for how long. At the end of each conversation the person will set up the date and time for another phone call.  The worker and volunteers on the service rotate the calls so that the client gets an opportunity to talk to various people with different character and interests.

Information required

  • Consent from the interested person
  • Completion of a short application form
  • Nomination of a contact person

Please note that all information provided will be confidential, kept safe and secure at all times.


Longford's Friendly Phone Call Service is a voluntarily staffed service.  All volunteers working on the service:

  • have Garda vetting,
  • have carried out relevant training,
  • are provided with clear policies and procedures and guidelines to work by.
